The New Armor Mod is NOT for the hardcore Close Combat gamer. It was done for the not so exigent wargamer, who wants fun over near-perfect realism. I decided to do it after several boys came to me and complained they wanted to play CC3 with the new graphics of the Real Red Mod, but that they didn't liked the way the armor penetration values were changed form the original game (what an heresy, huh?) or that they didn't liked that the 120 mm Mortar was removed from the game, along with the Wurfrahmen...They didn't particularly care about my reasoning that those weapons minimum ranges were not realistic within the size of the CC3 maps. They wanted to play with those units, and have fun.
They also wanted more powerful tank guns, especially the big German guns. Well, this I could relate to, as the original CC3 database is horrible in this respect.
To be quite true I was about to end this CC3 section and to substitute it for another wargame, but I was touched by those boys' request and decided to see what I could do to accommodate their needs.
Other thing was they didn't wanted a monster download, like what happens with the excellent Großdeutschland Mod (which I think is actually the very best mod for CC3), where you have to download a 13 MB Mod and then a load full of maps that are really difficult to download. With all this in mind I remembered one of the first mods that was available during the early days of CC3, and was done, if my memory doesn't fails me, by TT. It was called "The New Armor Mod", and consisted of a rather good gun penetration/armor values, with the values being provided by Robert Livingstone. This was pretty good mod and was a favorite of mine at that time. So good, that in fact, I do prefer it over the final Real Red correspondent values. So I did a frantic search over old diskettes to see if I could find it, since you can't find it over the Internet anymore. After some time, I finally found an old one that had it. So, I already had a pretty good base for the new mod. Out of gratitude and to recognize the real author of the basic mod I decided to call it the New Armor Mod.
Then came the new graphics problem. The easiest way was to use Dreaded88's fantastic new graphics developed for the Großdeutschland mod. It was a matter of opening the Tanks.zfx file and substitute the old graphics there (the ones that could be replaced, maintaining the original vehicles structure) with Dreaded88's new ones. To do this I had to get the zfx tool, which also couldn't be found anymore. Fortunately I found it in the same old diskette where I had saved The New Armor Mod years ago.
When I was searching over the Internet for the original New Armor Mod, I've found some new excellent Close Combat web sites, and a new utility called soundeditCC3. This ingenious program makes super easy to change any sound within the Sound.sfx file. So, I did something I wanted to do since I played the game for the first time, and that was to remove those annoying screams. I also substituted that awful MG 42 sound with a real MG 42 sound. This is a very personal preference. So, if you don't particularly care about the screaming, just don't download the new sounds file.
All the credit for this Mod goes to TT and Dreaded88.
ATTENTION: To use the New Armor Mod you have to do a FULL INSTALL of Close Combat III!
To download, just click on the buttons below. The download is MODULAR, that is; if you just want to have the new graphics but keep the original CC3 penetration and armor values, just download and install the New Armor Graphics module. If you, on the other hand, want the FULL New Armor Mod, download all three modules and install them. Instructions on how to install are included with each and every module (see the install instructions). As with any Mod, first backup your original files.
Revised: 12/01/2001.
The New Armor Data Files Module is a 13 KB download; The New Armor Graphics Module is a 3.4 MB download; The New Armor Sounds Module is a 7.5 MB download.
Well, that's what the New Armor is all about. It's an underground simple mod for those who want to have fun with the old good CC3. If you download it and like it, don't say thanks to me. Go to TT's and Dreaded88's and thank them instead. They are the real artists that deserve to be honored. Thank you!
